“Pollution is merely a resource that isn’t being used properly.”

EnergyWorks BioPower, LLC recently completed construction and began operations of the Gettysburg Energy & Nutrient Recovery Facility (GENRF), located adjacent to an egg production complex near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.  The host complex is recognized as a state-of-the-art operation with poultry housing, production systems and environmental features that exceed industry standards.

The first-of-its-kind GENRF is a logical extension of the farm host's industry leading operations.  It processes manure from 5 million egg layer chickens to produce up to 3.25 megawatts of renewable energy and recycles over 25 million pounds of recovered minerals annually.  As a sustainable alternative to storage and land application of manure, the facility will reduce nitrogen loading to the Chesapeake Bay watershed by over one milion pounds annually and reduce greenhouse gases equivalent to 30,000 tons of CO2 annually.

Electricity generated by the GENRF is used to self-power internal equipment and meet the needs of several of the host farms's layer sites and its feed mill.  Electricity produced in excess of the needs of GENRF and the farm is exported to the public grid under Pennsylvania's net-meteriing rules.

Recovered minerals from the facility are currently sold as fertilizer or soil amendment product; however, based on the results of a recently completed two-year testing program in collaboration with Pennsylvania State University, the product has been shown to be safe and effective for use as an animal feed ingredient.  Upon acceptance by the US Food and Drug Adminstration, the sterilized mineral product will be sold as an approved animal feed ingredient.  Closing the phosphorous cycle conserves a valuable resource and eliminates its potential environmental impact as a water pollutant.

The facility uses proprietary gasification technology to produce synthesis gas that is combusted to create thermal energy for power generation and process heat. Additional sustainability features include water and ammonia recovery, zero liquid discharge and use of an air-cooled condenser.
